11/7/15: Bottlenose dolphins, harbour porpoise and Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey. Start time 09:00.
Weather conditions: sunny, sea sate 3-2, wind direction SW.
Six bottlenose dolphins.

Two individuals were sighted out in the bay, who were thought to be foraging for food. One of these remained where they were for about an hour, with various others, including a juvenile, joining up with it before it moved off around the headland in a group of three. The other individual of the first two moved towards the end of the reef, where it was joined by another. The group near the reef was joined by another individual, and then two of them started to move towards the headland, during which time there was a boat encounter with a passenger boat. At the end of the survey, there was a group of three bottlenose dolphins off the headland near the fish factory, with another one sighted near the cardinal buoy, heading in a north-westerly direction.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00.
Weather conditions: sunny, decreasing to dull and overcast, sea state 1-2, wind direction SW.
Six bottlenose dolphins.

At the start of the survey, there was a group of five bottlenose dolphins sighted off the harbour wall, these were thought to be foraging at depth, as there was little movement, but the animals were often submerged for prolonged periods of time. A little later, one of this group left and moved off towards the reef, where it continued to forage at depth. One of the group of four was later identified as a juvenile. After about an hour, the whole group of five were sighted out near the reef, heading back towards the headland, and a smaller group of three was seen heading back towards the harbour sometime later. It was thought that this smaller group may have been a part of the larger group. Once the group of five had gathered near the harbour wall, a sixth individual was seen foraging near the reef.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00.
Weather conditions: dull and overcast, sea state 1-2, wind direction NW-SW.
Two Atlantic grey seals and 2 harbour porpoise.

One Atlantic grey seal was seen in the water off the headland heading towards the harbour wall, and later another was seen heading out towards the reef from the bay. Towards the end of the survey, a group of two harbour porpoise were seen travelling west around the headland.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00.
Weather conditions: dull and overcast with some rain later, sea state 3-4, wind direction NW-S.
Three harbour porpoise, one Atlantic grey seal, and three bottlenose dolphins.

At the beginning of the survey, a group of three harbour porpoise were seen travelling west towards the headland. A little later, this group encountered a sail boat, at which point they changed direction and began heading away from the boat, in a north-easterly direction. A group of two bottlenose dolphins were seen following the porpoise, and an Atlantic grey seal was seen moving towards the harbour wall. A little later, one bottlenose dolphin was seen near the end of the reef, heading towards the harbour wall, with another sighted just off the harbour wall. During the second half of the survey, there were two bottlenose dolphins, one of which was seen to be a juvenile, near the end of the reef, spending some time foraging at depth, and then mingling at the surface.
