11/10/11: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: Overcast/dull, sea state 3-4, wind SW, WSW
Eight bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

Bottlenose dolphins were initially seen at the beginning of the survey, north of the harbour wall foraging and feeding.  An Atlantic grey seal was also seen swimming next to the harbour wall.  In the last half of the survey a group of four bottlenose dolphins, including a calf, were seen foraging and travelling towards the end of the harbour wall.  These dolphins were then joined by a further four bottlenose dolphins that were also foraging and feeding.  These dolphins later split into separate groups, situated at the cardinal buoy and north of the harbour wall.

Three bottlenose dolphins

Three bottlenose dolphins were seen in the middle of this survey, first foraging between the harbour wall and cardinal buoy and then rapidly travelling towards the cardinal buoy.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: Overcast/dull/fair, sea state 2, wind SW
Four bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

Sightings occurred towards the end of the survey.  A female Atlantic grey seal was seen travelling past the harbour wall.  Four bottlenose dolphins were also sighted, foraging north of the harbour wall.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: Overcast/dull, sea state 2, wind SW
Ten bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

Bottlenose dolphins were seen throughout the majority of the survey.  Dolphins seen at the beginning of the survey were observed to be travelling towards the fish factory.  Later sightings included lots of travel and leaping behaviour by the dolphins in the area between the cardinal buoy and fish factory.  An Atlantic grey seal was also sighted in the water, north of the harbour wall.
