11/08/2017: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

Weather conditions: overcast/rain, sea state 1-2, wind direction S/SW

A pair of bottlenose dolphins were seen travelling across the bay in the first 15-minute period of this survey and were not seen again. Two Atlantic grey seals were also spotted bottling and swimming at the base of the harbour wall. There were no sightings in the last hour of the survey.

There were no sightings for the first hour of the survey until a mother and calf bottlenose dolphin and a pair of Atlantic grey seals appeared close to the harbour wall at the same time.

The mother and calf dolphins from the previous survey remained close to the harbour wall for the entire survey where they were seen foraging by long dives, milling and leaping.

The pair of dolphins from the previous surveys remained in the area for the entire duration of the survey. In the last hour of the survey one Atlantic grey seal was seen botting close to the harbour wall.

The dolphins from the previous surveys were recorded in the first 45 minutes of this survey, continuing to forage in the bay. There were no sightings for the rest of the survey.

There were no sightings in the first hour of the survey until one adult and one juvenile bottlenose dolphin were spotted leaping approximately 500 metres out to sea. They were recorded in just one 15-minute period and were not seen again.
