11/08/2015: 11 bottlenose dolphins, 1 Atlantic grey seal, 1 basking shark
2hr survey. Start time 07:00.
Weather conditions: fair, wind direction N/NE, sea state 2.
Nine bottlenose dolphins, three Atlantic grey seals.
Two bottlenose dolphins were sighted 15 minutes into the survey period, one travelling with irregular surfacing past the harbour wall, and the other travelling in with irregular surfacing from beyond the cardinal marker. In the next 15 minutes these two bottlenose dolphins were observed taking long dives, thought to be foraging at depth, in front of the harbour wall and by the cardinal marker. They were also joined in the survey area by two pairs of bottlenose dolphins, that travelled in from the west with irregular surfacing. By the second half of the survey period nine bottlenose dolphins were present in the survey area, all taking long dives between the harbour wall and the cardinal marker, and an Atlantic grey seal was also sighted in the water in front of the harbour wall.
2hr survey. Start time 09:00.
Weather conditions: fair/sunny, wind direction NW/N/NE, sea state 1.
Three bottlenose dolphins.
At the beginning of the survey period only three bottlenose dolphins remained in the survey area, two of which were travelling north/north-west past the cardinal marker, with the third taking long dives further west. After 15 minutes only one bottlenose dolphin was seen to remain in the survey area, travelling east past the cardinal marker and then taking long dives by the cardinal marker for the rest of the survey period. It was also briefly observed chasing prey at the surface, with fish also seen.
2hr survey. Start time 11:00.
Weather conditions: sunny, wind direction SW, sea state 1.
Three bottlenose dolphins, one basking shark.
The one bottlenose dolphin that remained at the end of the last survey period was observed still taking long dives at the cardinal marker for the first half an hour of the survey period. It was then joined by two further bottlenose dolphins at the cardinal marker, all of which proceeded to take long dives. A basking shark was then seen shortly afterwards, travelling north past the cardinal marker and the three bottlenose dolphins, before changing direction and travelled west away from the marker and the bottlenose dolphins, which continued to take long dives. The basking shark and the three bottlenose dolphins remained until the last half an hour of the survey period, by which time the basking shark headed off towards Aberaeron, and only one bottlenose dolphin remained by the cardinal marker, still taking long dives.
2hr survey. Start time 13:00.
Weather conditions: sunny, wind direction N/NW, sea state 1.
One bottlenose dolphin.
One remaining bottlenose dolphin from the previous survey period was observed travelling towards the cardinal marker with regular surfacing at the beginning of the survey period, before taking long dives around the cardinal marker for the first 45 minutes. It then disappeared for the rest of the survey period.
2hr survey. Start time 15:00.
Weather conditions: sunny, wind direction N/NW, sea state 2.
