1/10/2017: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: overcast/rain, sea state 2/3, wind direction S/SW

Two groups of dolphins were seen during the survey; a mother and calf were seen foraging by the cardinal buoy for the first hour, and one Atlantic grey seal was briefly seen in the water by the harbour wall. In the second hour, another mother and calf came in from the west and travelled first to towards the wall, then to the cardinal buoy to join the other group foraging.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: overcast/rain, sea state 2, wind direction S/SW

The survey began with a mother and calf bottlenose dolphins foraging by the cardinal buoy, which were briefly joined by two others in the second half hour. One male Atlantic grey seal was seen bottling, first by New Quay head, then in front of the harbour wall. In the final interval, 4 bottlenose dolphins (including 2 calves) were seen travelling west away from the cardinal buoy. These are likely to be the same dolphins seen in the previous survey.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: overcast/rain, sea state 1, wind direction S/SW

The same 4 bottlenose dolphins (including 2 calves) as in the previous survey were seen in foraging in front of the wall, but only in the first interval. One male Atlantic grey seal was briefly seen bottling some distance in front and to the right of the wall. There were no sightings in the second half of the survey.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: overcast, sea state 2, wind direction S/SW/W

Dolphins were only seen in the second hour of the survey. 3 bottlenose dolphins, including 1 calf, were seen circling fast, lunging and mingling at the surface near New Quay head, parallel to the wall. This group was then seen foraging near the cardinal buoy, and a male Atlantic grey seal was seen travelling west in front of the wall. The group of dolphins then split up: the mother and calf remained foraging near the cardinal buoy, while the other was seen lunging in front of the wall. In the final interval, the individual by the wall was joined by a juvenile, and they displayed a mixture of foraging and slow mingling behaviour.

2hr survey. Start time 17:00
Weather conditions: overcast, sea state 2, wind direction W/SW

5 bottlenose dolphins were seen in 2 groups. One dolphin was seen foraging near the cardinal buoy, and a mother and calf were mingling at the surface near the wall and later were seen chasing prey. The mother and calf then moved to forage near the cardinal buoy, and one Atlantic grey seal was seen in the water in front of the wall. In the second hour, the mother and calf were leaping and lunging near the cardinal buoy, while another group of 2 adults and a calf foraged between New Quay head and the cardinal buoy. In the final interval, a group of 4 (including 1 calf) were seen travelling, whilst foraging, north-east away from New Quay head.
