10/10/2017: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: overcast/fair/sunny, sea state 3, wind direction SW

Seven bottlenose dolphins were seen split into three groups during this survey. The survey began with one foraging by the cardinal marker (which stayed there for the first hour), and a mother and calf foraging off and to the right of New Quay head. One Atlantic grey seal was also seen some distance in front of the harbour wall during the first interval. After half an hour, the mother and calf dolphins were briefly joined by two more juveniles. This group then split up and most dolphins left the survey area, leaving one adult foraging halfway between the headland and the cardinal marker, and another foraging closer to the harbour wall. At the start of the second half of the survey, the individual foraging by the cardinal marker was briefly joined by a calf, which then left the survey area. The three dolphins remaining briefly joined together as a group foraging near the harbour wall, when an Atlantic grey seal was seen again near the wall. One dolphin then left the survey area, leaving one foraging near the cardinal marker and one foraging out beyond the marker, which then came in closer to the wall.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: overcast/sunny, sea state 1/2 , wind direction SW

This survey began with one bottlenose dolphin mingling at the surface behind the harbour wall for the first interval. A group of three bottlenose dolphins (including one calf) were also foraging by the cardinal marker, and remained there for most of the first hour. 2 dolphins were seen mingling by the harbour wall, and then joined by a third which had been foraging closer to Cei Bach. For the second half of the survey, the dolphins near the cardinal marker had left the survey area, and just one dolphin was left foraging near the wall. A mother and calf were then seen foraging by the cardinal marker for half an hour.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: overcast/sunny, sea state 2 , wind direction W/SW

A total of seven bottlenose dolphins were seen between two groups. In the first interval, two Atlantic grey seals were seen bottling by the harbour wall, and then one female was seen by New Quay head. During the second interval, a group of three dolphins (including one calf) were seen travelling from the cardinal marker to the harbour wall. This group then foraged by the harbour wall while one other adult appeared mingling at the surface halfway between the headland and the cardinal marker. This individual then travelled towards the cardinal marker whilst the other group lost one adult, and a mother and calf remained foraging close to the wall. This pair then joined the individual foraging by the cardinal marker for the start of the second hour. This group then travelled north-west out of the survey area, while another mother and calf appeared to mingle at the surface in the area between the marker and the waterfall. This pair moved closer to the harbour wall and were seen mingling at the surface for a short time. The survey ended with one individual foraging by the cardinal marker.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: overcast/fair/sunny, sea state 1 , wind direction SW

Just four Atlantic grey seals, in four separate groups, were seen during this survey. One female Atlantic grey seal was seen scanning in front of the harbour wall for the first interval. Half an hour later, one male seal was seen travelling west from the wall along the cliffs for half an hour. In the second half of the survey, a female seal was briefly seen bottling in front of the wall. For the final half an hour a female seal, believed to be very young as was very small and still light in colour, was seen logging in front of the harbour wall.
