10/10/2015: 28 bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: Overcast, sea state 1-2, wind direction E/SE
Six bottlenose dolphins

A group of six bottlenose dolphins, including one calf, appeared near the cardinal buoy around halfway through the survey period. The group of dolphins remained in the vicinity of the cardinal buoy for around 45 minutes, thought to be foraging at depth, before leaving the study area and travelling north.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: Overcast, sea state 2-3, wind direction SE
Seven bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

Dolphins were present throughout this survey period. Towards the start of the survey period, a group of three individuals, including one calf, was spotted offshore from the fish factory. They were travelling towards the cardinal buoy, surfacing at irregular intervals, indicating that they were searching for prey whilst on the move. Later in the survey period, a lone individual dolphin was spotted searching for prey and travelling towards the fish factory. Towards the end of the survey, two adult bottlenose dolphins were seen mingling at the surface offshore from the fish factory. They were engaging in some very energetic behaviours, such as leaping and tail slapping. In addition, a single female Atlantic grey seal was seen in the water in front of the harbour wall.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: Overcast, sea state 3, wind direction E
Ten bottlenose dolphins

At the start of the survey period, two individual dolphins were spotted offshore from the harbour wall. Both were travelling rapidly, one in the direction of the cardinal buoy, the other in the direction of the fish factory. Fifteen minutes into the survey, a group of three dolphins, including one calf, was spotted travelling towards the cardinal marker. This group remained in the vicinity of the cardinal buoy for around fifteen minutes, foraging at depth. During the second half of the survey period, a single bottlenose dolphin was spotted leaping and splashing a long way offshore. Closer in to the harbour wall, a group of three dolphins, with one calf, was seen travelling towards the cardinal marker. In the last half an hour, two groups were spotted travelling rapidly across the study area in an Easterly direction, one group of four, the other of two. In the last fifteen minutes of the survey, a group of five individuals, including one calf, was spotted foraging, to the west of the cardinal buoy.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: Overcast, sea state 2, wind direction E/SE
Five bottlenose dolphins

Half an hour into the survey period, two groups of dolphins were spotted, one of two adults and one of an adult and two youngsters. Both groups were leaping and tail slapping. Three of these individuals remained in the study area, undertaking long dives and thought to be foraging at depth, before disappearing around halfway through the survey period.
