10/07/15: 17 Bottlenose Dolphins and Two Harbour Porpoises

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: fair to sunny, sea state 1, wind direction varied from NE to S
Six bottlenose dolphins

There were bottlenose dolphins straight away in this survey with a group of two at the fish factory and a group of three behind the cardinal marker. Both groups were surfacing irregularly and possibly foraging deeper in the water. The group of three then left the harbour and the other group travelled around staying north of the harbour wall, where it was discovered that there were actually three individuals in the group. These bottlenose dolphins left shortly before the end of the survey.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 1, wind direction SE
Three bottlenose dolphins and two harbour porpoise

The first sighting in this survey was of a solitary bottlenose dolphin by the fish factory which was deep diving. It was only sighted briefly before disappearing, possibly around the headland. About half an hour later a pair of harbour porpoises were seen north of the harbour wall irregularly surfacing and shortly after two bottlenose dolphins were seen close by, though the porpoises had already left by this point. By the end of the survey all the animals had left the harbour.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 1, wind direction SW-SE
Five bottlenose dolphins

Three bottlenose dolphins were sighted near the fish factory. Two more individuals were sighted in the vicinity of the harbour wall. An hour into the survey three bottlenose dolphins around the fish factory were consistently sighted with one being identified as a juvenile. For the remainder of the survey an additional adult bottlenose was sighted and therefore included four adults and one juvenile thought to be foraging at depth by the repeated diving at depth within a small area.

2 hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 1 increasing to 2, wind direction S-SW
Three bottlenose dolphins

At the start of the survey 2 bottlenose dolphins were sighted irregularly diving and thought to be foraging. For the next hour they consistently stayed within the survey area and then were sighted with another bottlenose dolphin. Three dolphins were then consistently sighted for the remainder of the survey all staying in the area taking long dives.
