10/06/13: Bottlenose Dolphins & Atlantic Grey Seal

2hr survey, Start time 9:00
Weather Conditions: Sunny, sea state 1, wind ENE
Six Bottlenose Dolphins

Three bottlenose dolphins were foraging around the bay at the beginning of this survey, two in front of the wall, and one behind it in the harbour. The one in the harbour stuck around that area for the first hour, until it was seen travelling towards the North East in the second hour. The two in front of the wall were joined by another two but after 15 minutes only one of these was then seen. This dolphin started foraging around the Cardinal Buoy, and in the last half an hour of the survey only one dolphin was seen around this area.

2hr survey, Start time 11:00
Weather Conditions: Sunny-fair-overcast/dull, sea state 2, wind SW/S/SE
Four Bottlenose dolphins

One bottlenose dolphin was seen foraging around the Cardinal Buoy for the first 45 minutes of the survey. This was then joined by a mother and calf who appeared to be traveling towards the East; they didn’t go far however as all three were seen for the rest of the survey intermittently traveling and foraging until they were joined in the last 15 minutes by another and started mingling on the surface and lunging.
2hr survey, Start time 13:00
Weather Conditions: Overcast/dull-fair, sea state 1-2, wind SE
Five Bottlenose dolphins

Two dolphins and one calf were seen at the beginning of this survey by the Cardinal Buoy traveling towards the North West. After 15 minutes two more were spotted foraging around the Buoy, whilst the previous three were still traveling. These then disappeared, and only two were seen separately by the Buoy traveling towards the North West. Nothing was seen after this until right at the end of the survey when the five were seen again, four dolphins and a calf straight ahead and quite far out traveling towards the West, and the fifth foraging near them.

2hr survey, Start time 15:00
Weather Conditions: Sunny-fair, sea state 1, wind S/SE
Eight Bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic Grey seal

Three dolphins were spotted for the first 45 minutes of this survey, two initially traveling towards the East to the Cardinal Buoy until remaining there foraging, and another foraging straight ahead by the fish factory. Two separate dolphins were then seen by the fish factory traveling towards the East, whilst the two were still foraging by the Buoy, and another was also foraging in the same area. In the second hour of the survey, only one dolphin was seen to begin with, travelling towards the West and then foraging straight ahead, until another two plus a calf entered the survey area and were foraging by the Buoy. A grey seal was also spotted in the last half an hour, in the water by the Buoy.
