09/08/15 Bottlenose Dolphins

2hr survey. Start time 09:00.
Weather conditions: Dull and overcast, wind direction SW, sea state 1.
Six Bottlenose Dolphins.

At the beginning of the survey, there was a lone dolphin seen foraging far off shore. This dolphin remained in roughly the same place for the first hour of the survey. After about 15 minutes a group of three more dolphins arrived in the offshore area, where they remained for about 45 minutes. During this time they were exhibiting leaping and splashing behaviour. At the beginning of the second hour of the survey, all of the dolphins moved a little further in shore, but maintained the same behaviour. The group of three was also joined by a fourth individual. Soon after, all five moved further out from the wall again, though not quite as far as at the beginning of the survey, and they remained in roughly the same place for half an hour, until the last section of the survey. During the last 15 minutes of the survey, there were only two individuals seen, one off the headland, believed to be foraging, and the other near the wall, travelling towards the North West, where it left the survey area.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00.
Weather conditions: Dull and overcast, wind direction S to SW, sea state 1.
Six Bottlenose Dolphins.

At the start of the survey, there was a mother and calf seen around the harbour wall, who were later photo-identified as Jackie and her calf. During the second section of the survey, there were three groups of dolphins sighted. There was a lone dolphin seen near the headland leaping and splashing, there was a group of two dolphins at the cardinal marker, believed to be foraging. The third group, consisting of three individuals, was closer to the shore than the two at the marker, and they were seen leaping and splashing, rather than hunting. During the third section of the survey, there was a group of three dolphins seen travelling west past the headland, and they were also thought to be hunting on the move, as the dives were long and irregular. There were no further sightings during this survey.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00.

Three Bottlenose Dolphins.

There were no sightings until the second hour of this survey. At about four o’clock, two individuals were seen, one just off the harbour wall, and the other out towards the cardinal marker. Both of these individuals were thought to be foraging. After about 15 minutes, a third individual was seen travelling towards the south east, though it was thought to be hunting on the move. For the last half hour of the survey, there was a mother and a calf near the harbour wall foraging both at depth, and also at the surface.
