09/07/2016: Bottlenose dolphins and 1 Atlantic Grey Seal

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: Overcast/dull, sea state 1/2, wind direction S/SW
Three bottlenose dolphins

Approximately half an hour into the survey two individual bottlenose dolphins were sighted heading towards the harbour wall. One of these individuals stayed and showed other behaviours of staying around the headland with intermittent long dives for foraging. The other individual then travelled back into the bay from the fish factory and stayed travelling around this area for the rest of the survey with another bottlenose dolphin that joined.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: Overcast/dull, sea state 2, wind direction S/SW

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: Fair/Overcast/Dull, sea state 1/2, wind direction S
Six Bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic Grey Seal

The survey kicked off with two bottlenose dolphins (one being a calf) that were observed doing long dives around the cardinal buoy. They then travelled towards the harbour wall showing the same behaviour, but in the distance near the fish factory another two bottlenose dolphins were sighted going west towards the cardinal buoy, also one Atlantic Grey Seal was observed swimming around Dolau beach for the next half an hour. The travelling pair of dolphins was still sighted travelling west until the last fifteen minutes of the survey. Another group of two dolphins were sighted coming into the harbour one being a calf, they showed a range of behaviours from long dives, slow circling and milling at the surface. The calf showed the behaviours as well as leaping and the odd tail slap.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: Overcast/dull, sea state 1/2, wind direction S/SW
Seven Bottlenose dolphins

Bottlenose dolphins were sighted throughout the entire two hour survey. Within the first fifteen minutes 6 dolphins were sighted including a calf. The mother and calf from the previous survey stayed around for the entire survey duration, they travelled from the harbour wall towards the cardinal buoy showing the behaviour of long dives and slow travel towards the buoy. The other four dolphins showed a range of behaviours with lunges and mingling off shore. Two of the four dolphins stayed within they bay, but were observed travelling East towards the fish factory, this group of dolphins were then not seen until the last forty five minutes were another dolphin joined and all five showed the behaviours of lunging and milling around the same location earlier in the survey. The mother and calf were the only dolphins observed in the last fifteen minutes seen travelling towards the fish factory.
