09/07/2015: 18 bottlenose dolphins and seven harbour porpoises

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 2, wind direction N
Four bottlenose dolphins and one harbour porpoise

At the beginning of this survey one bottlenose dolphin was spotted near the cardinal buoy, doing long dives. When two other individuals came travelling in from the east, including one calf, this individual joined them and they continued travelling west, where after they turned around and started doing long dives north of the harbour wall, joined by a fourth individual. Then the mother and calf disappeared past the fish factory while the other two stayed foraging for a bit longer near the fish factory, where after they disappeared as well. Towards the end of this survey one harbour porpoise was spotted travelling eastwards north of the wall.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 2, wind direction N
Two bottlenose dolphins and two harbour porpoises

Right at the beginning of this survey two harbour porpoises were spotted north of the wall, including one calf. They were doing long dives, suspected to be foraging at depth, before they disappeared from view. Approximately halfway through this survey two bottlenose dolphins were shortly spotted, doing long dives near the fish factory.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 2-1, wind direction NW
Two bottlenose dolphins and four harbour porpoises

At the beginning of this survey, again two harbour porpoises were spotted travelling westwards far north of the wall, and later they turned around travelling eastwards. Later two bottlenose dolphins and two harbour porpoises were spotted quite close to each other, which is very unusual due to occasional aggressive behaviour of dolphins towards porpoises. The dolphins were travelling west far north of the wall, while the porpoises were behind them, travelling in the same direction. Soon the porpoises disappeared from view, where after also the dolphins disappeared.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 1, wind direction NW
Ten bottlenose dolphins

At first a mother and calf were travelling close to the harbour wall. Then two groups emerged from around the headland and joined together in one group of seven individuals, heading southerly, splashing at the surface. In the meantime four individuals, divided in four groups, were around the cardinal buoy, later joined by the mother and calf which were close to the harbour wall. In total ten individuals were spotted throughout this survey, changing in group composition and moving throughout the entire study area. At the end only three individuals, including the calf, were seen milling around at the surface near the cardinal buoy.
