08/10/2017: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: fair/sunny, sea state 2, wind direction NW

A single dolphin was seen early in the survey north of the harbour wall. Soon after a mother and calf was spotted foraging near the cardinal marker. Mid survey a second mother and calf pairing appeared just off the end of the harbour wall. These five dolphins remained within the survey area for the remainder of the watch.

Weather conditions: fair/sunny, sea state 2, wind direction NW/N

Bottlenose dolphins were seen for all of this survey. The five dolphins from the previous watch remained foraging throughout the area. At the start of the survey a female Atlantic grey seal was observed near Dolau Beach and then again later near the cardinal marker. A Portuguese Man of War was seen close to the harbour wall.

Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 1, wind direction SW

This survey started with just a single dolphin foraging close to the cardinal marker. A mother and calf were then seen near the headland. Mid survey the activity quietened with just sightings of single dolphins off shore until in the last half hour a mother and calf re-entered the bay off the headland and joined with a third dolphin.

Weather conditions: fair/sunny, sea state 1, wind direction S

This survey began with the three dolphins foraging off the headland where they remained for 45 minutes. They were then joined by more dolphins giving a total of 6 individuals including a second mother and calf pair. An Atlantic grey seal was observed bottling off Dolau Beach and later near the wall.
