08/10/2015: 5 bottlenose dolphins and 3 Atlantic grey seals
2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 1, wind direction S
Four bottlenose dolphins
At the beginning of the survey period, two lone bottlenose dolphins were seen near the cardinal marker, with both observed to be foraging at depth. Roughly half an hour later, both individuals were each joined by another bottlenose dolphin, creating two pairs of individuals. Both pairs were observed to forage at depth around the cardinal marker until the end of the survey period, when one of the pairs split up and one of the individuals moved further offshore to continue to forage and the other three continued to forage around the cardinal marker.
2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: sunny/fair, sea state 1, wind direction S/SE
Five bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal
The four bottlenose dolphins seen in the previous survey period reformed into two pairs, and continued to forage around the cardinal marker. A single Atlantic grey seal was also seen in the water near the headland. Half way through the survey period, the two pairs of bottlenose dolphins formed a group of four, before splitting again into two pairs and foraged at depth near the cardinal marker till the end of the survey period. At the end of the survey period, a new bottlenose dolphin was seen and all five individuals formed one group to travel west away from the cardinal marker with regular surfacing.
2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: fair/overcast, sea state 1, wind direction S/W/NW
Five bottlenose dolphins and two Atlantic grey seals
The group of five bottlenose dolphins seen at the end of the last survey period continued to travel west, away from the cardinal marker and towards the headland. About fifteen minutes into the survey period, the group disappeared round the headland. A female Atlantic grey seal was also seen, bottling in the water near the headland, with another Atlantic grey seal spotted shortly after further back. The female individual continued to disappear and resurface to bottle in the water throughout the first half of the survey period, before disappearing.
