08/08/14: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

Six bottlenose dolphins and 14 Atlantic grey seals

In the first half an hour of the survey, six Atlantic grey seals were sighted in the water close to Birds’ Rock. An hour into the survey, four bottlenose dolphins were seen foraging, leaping and socialising off Ynys Lochtin. Following this, three Atlantic grey seals were sighted in the water between Ynys Lochtin and Cwmtydu. A mother and calf bottlenose dolphin was spotted travelling east towards Cwmtydu. Towards the end of the survey five Atlantic grey seals were sighted, three hauled out and two in the water by New Quay headland.

Nearly an hour into the survey, a single male Atlantic grey seal was sighted swimming and eating fish in open water off from Cwmtydu. An hour later, a single adult bottlenose dolphin was seen leaping near Aberporth. This dolphin was then joined by a group of two adult dolphins mingling and two adult dolphins and a calf bow riding and wake riding. Only twenty minutes later still near Aberporth, another group of dolphins were spotted, this time a mother and two calves. These displayed leaping, tail slapping and bow riding behaviours. Following this, one further single adult bottlenose dolphin was seen foraging. On the return journey, a female Atlantic grey seal was sighted in the water between Ynys Lochtin and Cwmtydu.
