08/08/12: Six Atlantic grey seals, 20 harbour porpoise, eight bottlenose dolphins, 100+ common dolphins and a thresher shark

Six Atlantic grey seals, 20 harbour porpoise, eight bottlenose dolphins, 100 common dolphins and a thresher shark

At the beginning of the survey two Atlantic grey seals were seen bottling, one female and one male. Another grey seal was seen swimming on the surface 200 metres from the boat. Two harbour porpoise were seen travelling south, 200 metres from the boat. Three harbour porpoise were seen travelling NNE. Shortly after four harbour porpoise were seen traveling south-west, and then one lone harbour porpoise was seen travelling west and another lone harbour porpoise was seen travelling east. A 15-20ft thresher shark was also seen fully breaching out of the water (jumped 3 times) about 400 metres from the boat.  A female Atlantic grey seal was seen in the water, 40 metres from the boat. After this 100+ common dolphins were seen, with about 30 around the boat. They were seen leaping and travelling north-east.

Later on in the survey a female Atlantic grey seal was seen bottling 250 metres from the boat. Also eight bottlenose dolphins, including two calves, were seen foraging, leaping and travelling north. They were at a distance of 300 metres from the boat. Four harbour porpoise, including two calves, were seen travelling north and three harbour porpoise were seen travelling west, about 180 metres from the boat.

Towards the end of the survey, two harbour porpoise were seen travelling west and foraging about 110 metres from the boat. Lastly, one Atlantic grey seal was seen in the water about 60 metres from the boat.
