07/08/12: Bottlenose dolphins

Eight bottlenose dolphins including two calves

Three bottlenose dolphins including one calf were seen near the fish factory, one of the dolphins was foraging whilst the others were travelling east towards the cardinal buoy and surfacing regularly. These three dolphins, including the calf, made their way to the cardinal buoy whilst three other bottlenose dolphins, including another calf, were spotted close to the harbour wall chasing prey at the surface. These three dolphins remained at the wall hunting, leaping and playing in the waves, they travelled together at the surface towards the fish factory and then made their way back to the wall shortly afterwards. This group of three animals were also joined by another bottlenose dolphin for a short period, they were seen mingling at the surface. Another individual bottlenose dolphin was spotted close to the harbour wall foraging and diving at depth.

Weather conditions: sunny/overcast/rain; sea state 1-2, wind S-SSE
Six bottlenose dolphins

Four bottlenose dolphins, including one calf were seen by the fish factory leaping and lunging. A fifth bottlenose dolphin was also seen close to this group foraging. Another individual bottlenose dolphin was seen close to the harbour wall foraging and diving at depth. These six dolphins remained in the bay, congregating at the cardinal buoy, fish factory and harbour wall. The main behaviour displayed was diving at depth and foraging.

Two bottlenose dolphins were seen throughout the survey predominately by the fish factory. The main behaviour displayed was diving and foraging at depth.

Three bottlenose dolphins

Three bottlenose dolphins were seen throughout the survey, the main behaviour was foraging but as the animals grouped together towards the end of the survey they began leaping, lunging and tail slapping. The dolphins were seen towards the cardinal buoy and close to the fish factory.
