07/06/2016: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seal

2hr survey. Start time 07:00
Weather conditions: mist, sea state: 1, wind direction: SW to NW
7 bottlenose dolphins & 1 Atlantic grey seal

Fifteen minutes into the survey, one Atlantic grey seal was spotted near the headland. In total seven bottlenose dolphins were observed during the survey. One bottlenose dolphin came very close to the harbour wall and was thought to be travelling in the bay. The other five dolphins were seen at various times and far away in the distance. They exhibited behaviours such as leaping, milling, tail slapping and foraging. Various seabirds such as razorbills, guillemots, oystercatchers and cormorants were also seen.

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: overcast, sea state: 1, wind direction: W/SW
10 bottlenose dolphins

At the very beginning of this survey period, three bottlenose dolphins were observed leaping and tail slapping near the fish factory and one was sighted foraging near the cardinal buoy. In total, 10 bottlenose dolphins were sighted all around the survey area. Many were travelling in the area, while other displayed behaviours such as tail slapping, mingling at the surface, leaping and foraging at depth.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: mist, sea state: 1, wind direction: W
4 Bottlenose dolphins

At the start of the survey, three bottlenose dolphins, two of which were seen in the previous survey, were sighted near the headland and one was sighted foraging near the cardinal buoy. These bottlenose dolphins travelled towards the cardinal buoy and were seen foraging close to the buoy for the rest of the survey.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: overcast/sunny, sea state: 1, wind direction: NW/none
6 Bottlenose dolphins

At the start of the survey, five bottlenose dolphins, including a calf, were sighted near the cardinal buoy. They were thought to be foraging at depth. Two of the dolphins quickly disappeared out of sight. Halfway through the survey, three bottlenose dolphins were spotted near the cardinal buoy but two of them also quickly disappeared. During the rest of the survey, four bottlenose dolphins, including a calf, were spotted foraging at depth near the cardinal buoy.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state: 1, wind direction: NW
5 bottlenose dolphins

The four dolphins, including the calf, from the previous survey were sighted at the start of the survey and stayed until just a little over halfway into the survey. One bottlenose dolphin joined this group, near the cardinal buoy, halfway into the survey but quickly disappeared out of sight. The dolphins were taking long dives and were thought to be foraging at depth. For the last 15 minutes of the survey, only 2 bottlenose dolphins out of the five were sighted. One was foraging near the cardinal buoy while the other was foraging more than 1km away from the harbour wall.

2hr survey. Start time 17:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state: 1, wind direction: NW/W
5 bottlenose dolphin

Right at the start of the survey, one bottlenose dolphin was spotted foraging near the cardinal buoy. Later three bottlenose dolphins, including a calf, were seen travelling west towards the headland. After one hour, they disappeared out of sight. Just before the end of the survey, two bottlenose dolphins were sighted near the headland. They were taking long dives and were thought to be foraging at depth.
