07/06/2016: Bottlenose Dolphins and Atlantic Grey Seal

4 Bottlenose dolphins and 6 Atlantic grey seal

Two bottlenose dolphins, including a calf, were seen from the start of the survey whilst the boat was on its way out from New Quay harbour. These animals were travelling north and seen around 50m from the boat. The second sighting was about one hour into the trip. It was two bottlenose dolphins. Six Atlantic grey seals were also seen during the trip. Five were seen bottling in the water and the other was hauled out on a rock.

The first sighting was about 30 minutes into the survey around Birds Rock. Two bottlenose dolphins were sighted at about 800 metres from the boat. No more dolphins were sighted for the rest of the survey. In total, during the survey, ten Atlantic grey seals were spotted. Six of these seals were identified as female. Seven of the seals were seen swimming and three of them were hauled out. Further, about 20 guillemots were seen nesting on the cliffs.

About 30 minutes into the survey, the first two sightings occurred. One Atlantic grey seal was spotted in the water and one bottlenose dolphin was seen 150 metres from the boat travelling west. During the rest of the survey, six Atlantic grey seals were also seen in the water. Right at the end of the survey, one bottlenose dolphin was spotted 750 metres from the boat and was exhibiting a foraging behaviour. Further, during the survey, many interesting birds were spotted, such as a fulmar, a kestrel and two red kites.
