07/06/15: 22 Bottlenose Dolphins

2hr survey. Start time 07:00
Weather conditions: Sunny, sea state 3 decreasing to 2, wind direction N-NNW
Three bottlenose dolphins

In the first section of this survey two adult bottlenose dolphins were seen close to the harbour wall doing long, irregular dives. They only stayed for a short period of time but around 30 minutes afterward another individual was seen off the fish factory. This animal was displaying the same diving behaviour of the earlier two.

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: Sunny, sea state 2 increasing to 3, wind direction NW
Five bottlenose dolphins

At the beginning of the survey there were two groups of bottlenose dolphins in the survey area. One individual was right in the harbour south east of the pier. The other group was a group of four about 400 metres north of the wall, two of these were juveniles. Both groups were regularly surfacing to begin with but the group of four began to display more energetic behaviour later on with splashes seen at the surface as they moved. The larger group then split off into two pairs- one adult and juvenile came in close to the harbour wall. The other pair remained further out and continued splashing at the surface. After that, the individual left the harbour and the others gradually moved further away around the headland.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: Sunny, sea state 3, wind direction NW
Eight bottlenose dolphins

Yet more dolphins were seen in this survey. To begin with, one mother-juvenile pair and one individual were seen travelling south quickly into the harbour. One of these then left and the other two remained deep diving in the harbour off the end of the lifeboat pier. Two more groups then moved in; two to the east of the pier deep diving and another to the north of the wall which was regularly surfacing. Both of these new groups had juveniles with them and they stuck around for the remaining survey period.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: Sunny, sea state 3, wind direction NW
Five bottlenose dolphins

The two groups from the previous survey were spotted at the beginning of this survey. The group close to the inner harbour wall stuck around for the majority of the survey, most likely still foraging for food. The group near the cardinal buoy stayed near it moving closer to the reef for a while. They were also joined by another dolphin which arrived halfway through the survey. With the new arrival there was a lot of splashing suddenly, as they greeted the new arrival.
