06/09/2015: 12 bottlenose dolphins, 1 Atlantic Grey Seal
2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: overcast/fair, sea state 1-2, wind direction SE
One lone dolphin was spotted for just a few moments about half way into the survey travelling from the headland towards the Cardinal Buoy. Half an hour later, five dolphins including one calf were spotted foraging by the reef, quite close to the beach. They stayed by the beach for a while before making their way along the reef with lots of foraging behaviour including shallow and deep dives, and leaping and splashing.
2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: overcast/fair/sunny, sea state 1-2, wind direction SE
The same group of five dolphins were seen foraging, leaping and splashing throughout this survey. They were joined by another dolphin to bring the group total up to 6. Although the dolphins were quite far out, lots of gannets were seen circling above and feeding around the dolphin, indicating that feeding was occurring.
2hr survey. Start time 13.00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 1, wind direction N/NW
Initially no dolphins were seen suggesting the group from the last survey had left. Four dolphins were then spotted beyond the cardinal marker travelling rapidly. This group were then joined by another two and the group were seen travelling around the survey area with occasional leaping and splashing behaviour. They left the survey area around halfway through the survey. A lone dolphin was then spotted foraging off the headland in the last 15 minutes of the survey.
2hr survey. Start time 15.00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 1-2, wind direction E/N/NE
There were no sightings during this survey until the last fifteen minutes when a male Atlantic Grey Seal was spotted in front of the harbour wall in the water.
