06/08/2013 – Bottlenose dolphins

2 hour survey, start time: 9:00
Weather conditions: Fair – overcast, sea state 1, wind W

At the start of the survey one bottlenose dolphin was spotted travelling west, towards the fish factory.  Two bottlenose dolphins were spotted foraging south of the cardinal buoy for the first 45 minutes, after which one disappeared.  After 30 minutes two bottlenose dolphins were spotted north of the harbour wall, travelling SE.  One of this group stayed and foraged near the harbour wall for the rest of the survey and the other travelled NE.  After 45 minutes, one bottlenose dolphin was spotted west of the cardinal buoy.  Four bottlenose dolphins were spotted catching fish at the surface, near the cardinal buoy for the last hour.

2 hour survey, start time: 11:00
Weather conditions: Fair, sea state 1, wind NW

One bottlenose dolphin was spotted east of the fish factory foraging and catching fish for the first 45 minutes of the survey.  Four bottlenose dolphins, including one calf were spotted foraging, west of the cardinal buoy, dispersing and regrouping for most of the survey.  One bottlenose dolphin was spotted foraging near the harbour wall after 30 minutes.  Three bottlenose dolphins were spotted NW of the cardinal buoy, catching fish and travelling SE for the last hour of the survey.  Finally a female Atlantic grey seal was spotted in the water near the harbour wall.

2 hour survey, start time: 13:00
Weather conditions: Fair – Sunny, sea state 0-1

After 15 minutes, five bottlenose dolphins, including two calves, were spotted south of the cardinal buoy foraging, where they remained for an hour.  Two bottlenose dolphins were spotted north of the cardinal buoy, foraging.  Three bottlenose dolphins were spotted, including one calf, west of the cardinal buoy, travelling west.

2 hour survey, start time: 15:00
Weather conditions: Fair, sea state 1

Half an hour into the survey three dolphins (including a calf) were observed leaping west of the cardinal buoy. Two dolphins were spotted in the next 15 minutes foraging southwest of the cardinal buoy and another two spotted travelling slowly towards the cardinal buoy from the east. The last sighting was halfway through the survey where two dolphins were seen leaping just offshore from the fish factory and a further three dolphins were seen travelling northeast from the harbour wall.
