06/08/2013: 35 bottlenose dolphins, 4 Atlantic grey seals

4 bottlenose dolphins, 1 Atlantic grey seal

One bottlenose dolphin was spotted foraging east of the harbour wall.  One female grey seal was spotted bottling NW of Cwm Tydu.  Three bottlenose dolphins were spotted near New Quay harbour.

Two adults and one juvenile bottlenose dolphin were spotted foraging just off the cardinal buoy right at the beginning of the survey. Another dolphin was then seen travelling just off the coast of Cwm Tydu 45 minutes into the survey. A female Atlantic grey seal and another adult bottlenose dolphin were then spotted on the stretch of coast between Cwm Tydu and Ynys Lochtyn halfway through the survey. The same group of three bottlenose dolphins were still around the cardinal buoy on the return to New Quay, displaying leaping behaviour as well as continuing to forage for food.

Two bottlenose dolphins were seen at the beginning of the survey foraging and mingling just off the harbour wall. A further three (including a calf) were then spotted foraging near the fish factory. Halfway through the survey, a bottlenose dolphin was spotted leaping and foraging near Ynys Lochtyn headland. The first sighting of Atlantic grey seals occurred just south of Cwm Tydu where one female was spotted in the water and another female hauled out on the rocks. The last sighting of the survey was of two dolphins foraging near the fish factory.

15 bottlenose dolphins

The survey got off to an energetic start with six bottlenose dolphins, including one juvenile and one calf, were spotted just offshore form New Quay harbour wall exhibiting a range of behaviour including milling, lunging, tail-slapping and travelling in a westerly direction. Another two adult bottlenose dolphins began to bow ride and fast travel alongside the boat near Bird’s rock half way through the survey. On the return leg of the survey, two adults and a calf were spotted foraging and expressing close contact with one another near Bird’s rock. The last sighting of the survey consisted of four bottlenose dolphins (including two juveniles and a calf) foraging and leaping near Target rock.
