06/08/15 1 Unidentified Cetacean, 5 Bottlenose Dolphins and 1 Atlantic Grey Seal

One unidentified cetacean.

At around 08.30, an unidentified cetacean was briefly seen displaying energetic behaviour close to the fish factory. There were no other sightings during this survey.

Weather conditions: Overcast, sea state 2, wind direction NW.
One bottlenose dolphin.

A lone bottlenose dolphin was spotted foraging at around 10:15 near the fish factory. It was seen again 30 minutes later between the cardinal marker and the fish factory, travelling west.

Weather conditions: Fair-overcast, sea state 2 turning 3, wind direction NW.
Three bottlenose dolphins.

One bottlenose dolphin was seen foraging at the fish factory about 30 minutes into the survey. There were no more sightings until 12:15, when two bottlenose dolphins (including a juvenile) were seen foraging close to the harbour wall. They moved towards the cardinal marker where they were seen foraging during the last 15 minutes of the survey.

Weather conditions: Fair-sunny, sea state 3, wind direction W.
Three bottlenose dolphins, one Atlantic grey seal.

Three bottlenose dolphins including a juvenile were seen foraging close to the cardinal marker during the whole survey. They were occasionally seen leaping, tail slapping, splashing and socialising at the surface. Upon a close boat encounter, the group split into two. While two dolphins remained foraging in approximately the same area, the third dolphin swam west, taking longer dives, and was not seen resurfacing during the last 15 minutes of the survey. In addition, an Atlantic grey seal was seen swimming SW of the cardinal marker at around 14:15.

Weather conditions: Sunny, sea state 2, wind direction NW-SW.
Three bottlenose dolphins.

Two bottlenose dolphins including a juvenile were seen foraging by the cardinal marker throughout the survey. During the last 45 minutes, they were also leaping and splashing. A third dolphin was seen foraging with the pair at around 15:30, but was not seen again until the end of the survey.
