05/10/2013 – Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic Grey Seals

Six bottlenose dolphins

A mother and calf bottlenose dolphins were spotted at the beginning of the survey period and were shortly joined by four other adults. All six dolphins stayed in the waters between the harbour wall and the cardinal buoy foraging at depth for over an hour. Two of the dolphins then left and the remaining four dolphins continued their foraging.

16 bottlenose dolphins and one atlantic grey seal

At the beginning of the survey six bottlenose dolphins, including 2 calves were observed foraging at depth around the cardinal buoy and staying at the surface with lots of leaps, lunges and tail slaps. An adult was also spotted further out in front of the harbour wall travelling westerly. These dolphins were then joined by several more adults and there were several groups between the fish factory and the cardinal buoy foraging at depth and travelling; ten of these were spotted all together. In the middle of the survey they were also joined by an atlantic grey seal which appeared by the harbour wall.

At the beginning of this survey period three bottlenose dolphins were seen, including one calf and they were chasing prey at the surface around the cardinal buoy to begin with and then began foraging at depth. This group travelled north and two more dolphins were then spotted travelling east of the fish factory also foraging at depth. Near the end of the survey time an atlantic grey seal appeared in front of the harbour wall shortly.

During the beginning of the survey three bottlenose dolphins as well as one calf were foraging at depth whilst travelling east of the fish factory. An atlantic grey seal was also spotted during the survey period in front of the harbour wall. The dolphins were last seen travelling west towards the fish factory by the end of the survey.
