04/11/2012: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seal

Nine bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

Nine bottlenose dolphins including one calf were observed throughout the 2hr survey. They were seen displaying a variety of behaviour such as foraging, chasing prey at the surface, leaping and socialising. A young female Atlantic grey seal was also spotted in front of the harbour wall.

Weather conditions: Fair, overcast and rain, sea state 1 – 2, wind SE
11 bottlenose dolphins and two Atlantic grey seals

During the first half hour of the survey two bottlenose dolphins were observed foraging near to the cardinal buoy and six bottlenose dolphins including one calf were observed milling at the surface before leaving the survey area. Three bottlenose dolphins later returned into the bay and were spotted near to the fish factory mingling at the surface, leaping and tail slapping.

Weather conditions: Rain to start turning fair, sea state 2 – 3, wind SE
Nine bottlenose dolphins

Four bottlenose dolphins including one calf were observed near to the fish factory mingling at the surface, leaping and tail slapping before leaving the survey area. Five bottlenose dolphins later travelled into the bay and were observed foraging near to the fish factory. A further two bottlenose dolphins were observed mingling at the surface, leaping and tail slapping North West of the fish factory.

Due to failing light, no 15.00 survey took place.
