04/09/2017: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

Weather conditions: fair/overcast, sea state 1, wind direction SW

 No marine mammal sightings but sandwich terns were recorded.

No sightings.

There were no sightings for the first hour of the survey until a pair of bottlenose dolphins was spotted travelling towards the cardinal marker where they foraged by long dives. In the last half an hour a female Atlantic grey seal was seen scanning and bottling in front of the harbour wall.

Weather conditions: fair/sunny/overcast, sea state 1, wind direction S

Half way through the survey a pair of bottlenose dolphins was spotted just past New Quay headland before moving out of view. In the last 15 minutes a solitary dolphin was traveling eastwards across the bay.

2hr survey. Start time 17:00
Weather conditions: overcast, sea state 2-3, wind direction S/SW

A solitary dolphin was seen travelling across the bay with four associated gannets circling above. A pair of mother and calf dolphins was also seen foraging before moving out of view. In the last half an hour of the survey bottlenose dolphins travelled closer inshore alongside a visitor passenger boat. An Atlantic grey seal was also seen swimming close to the harbour wall.
