04/09/2017: 8 bottlenose dolphins and 16 Atlantic grey seals

8 Atlantic grey seals and 4 bottlenose dolphins

The first sighting of this survey was of an Atlantic grey seal pup with its mother hauled out on the rocks under Bird’s Rock. Another adult seal was seen nearby in the water. The second sighting was of a mother and calf bottlenose dolphin pair foraging off Ynys Lochtyn headland. On the return leg of the journey another five seals including a pup were spotted hauled out on the beach and scanning in the water. The last sighting of the survey was two bottlenose dolphins foraging close to Target Rock.

Weather conditions: sea state 1-3, visibility 1-10, light swell
8 Atlantic grey seals and 4 bottlenose dolphins

The first sighting of this survey occurred within New Quay bay as the survey was setting off, and it was of two bottlenose dolphins foraging and travelling north east. The second sighting was of two more dolphins foraging within the bay. The third sighting was of another lone dolphin foraging in a similar area. The forth sighting of this survey was of two Atlantic grey seals hauled out near Bird’s Rock, one adult and one new born. A male seal was also seen in the water nearby. A male seal was then sighted in the water near Cwmtydu, with another two male seals also being sighted further along. Closer to Ynys Loctyn, 6 female seals were spotted bottling in the water with new born seal hauled out on the shore. Another seal was then spotted in the water near Ynys Loctyn.
