04/06/2016: 21 Bottlenose Dolphins & 11 Atlantic Grey Seals

 Two Atlantic grey seals were sighted in the water near Birds Rock within the first ten minutes of the survey and another two were seen half an hour later, also in the water along the coastline. A group of eight dolphins (including two juveniles) were seen shortly after the second seal sighting of the survey and this group were around 400 metres away from the boat and displaying a variety of behaviours including foraging, leaping and tail-slapping, before travelling east.

The first sighting of this boat survey was of a male (bull) seal that was hauled out on the rocks around 100 metres away from the boat. Around 45 minutes in to the survey, two bottlenose dolphins (a mother and calf) were observed foraging and leaping around 50 metres away from the boat. Another bottlenose dolphin joined the area and proceeded to bow-ride with the survey boat, before moving away to forage. A further three Atlantic grey seals were sighted in the water within the second hour of the survey, as well a large group of guillemots resting of the water surface.

During the first hour of the survey, two bottlenose dolphins were observed travelling northwards and a group of four (including a juvenile) were also observed foraging and tail-slapping around 200 metres away from the boat, before the proceeded to approach the boat and bow-ride. Another two bottlenose dolphins were sighted during the second half of the survey and appeared to be foraging and leaping, before approaching the boat to bow-ride.

The first sighting of the survey was of one female Atlantic grey seal bottling in the water, around 50 metres away from the survey boat. Around half an hour later, another Atlantic grey seal was observed travelling in the water. Towards the very end of the survey, one bottlenose dolphin was seen foraging around 50 metres away from the boat. Many bird species were also noted during this survey including razorbills, guillemots, oystercatchers, kittiwakes, shags and cormorants.

Shortly after the boat survey began, one bottlenose dolphin was sighted around 200 metres from the boat and was observed foraging, before approaching the boat and bow-riding. An hour later, one female Atlantic grey seal was also seen in the water.
