04/06/2016: 15 Bottlenose Dolphins & 1 Atlantic Grey Seal

2hr survey. Start time 07:00
Weather conditions: fair, sea state: 1, wind direction: NW/none
9 bottlenose dolphins & 1 Atlantic grey seal

Three bottlenose dolphins were observed early into the survey near the fish factory, displaying a mixture of travelling and foraging behaviours. One dolphin then travelled off round the headland and out of sight, whilst the other two remained in the bay and travelled towards the cardinal marker. These two dolphins were then seen taking long dives beneath the surface, which was thought to indicate that they were foraging at depth and shortly after, another two dolphins appeared nearby the headland and were also thought to be foraging. Towards the end of the survey, another four dolphins were sighted near the fish factory and one Atlantic grey seal was also spotted in the bay.

At the very beginning of this survey period, two bottlenose dolphins were observed diving beneath the surface nearby the fish factory headland and this was thought to indicate that they were foraging at depth. Just after the first hour of the survey, one further bottlenose dolphin was sighted travelling through the bay.

2hr survey. Start time 17:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state: 1, wind direction: NW
1 bottlenose dolphin

One bottlenose dolphin was observed during this survey, just after the first hour had passed. The dolphin was thought to be foraging at depth due to the long dives it was taking beneath the surface within the same area. Lots of birds were also sighted during this survey including herring gulls, jackdaws, cormorants, oystercatchers, rock pipits and a red kite soaring over the harbour.
