03/10/2012 Atlantic grey seals and bottlenose dolphins

2hr survey; start time 09:00
Weather conditions; fair, sea state 2-4, wind direction SW
One Atlantic grey seal and nine bottlenose dolphins

One Atlantic grey seal was seen travelling along the harbour wall at the start of the survey, this seal was then spotted closer to the fish factory and was not seen again throughout the survey. One bottlenose dolphin was seen milling around at the surface close to the harbour wall whilst two other dolphins including a calf, were seen leaping further out from the harbour wall. The three dolphins then joined together and were foraging and leaping in front of the harbour wall. Two bottlenose dolphins were then seen foraging further out from the harbour wall. Two dolphins including a calf were seen foraging near to the harbour wall as well as two foraging behind the harbour wall. Five bottlenose dolphins including a calf were seen chasing prey in front of the harbour wall and one was seen foraging further out. Two other bottlenose dolphins were seen chasing prey from behind the harbour wall.

2hr survey; start time 11:00
Weather conditions; sunny and fair, sea state 3-4, Wind direction SW/W/NW
Seven bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

Five bottlenose dolphins including a calf were seen foraging and mingling at the surface in front of the harbour wall. Two bottlenose dolphins were then seen foraging and mingling at the surface near to the harbour wall. They then split and one bottlenose dolphin was seen foraging out by the cardinal buoy whilst the other remained milling around in front of the harbour wall. One Atlantic grey seal was then spotted by the harbour wall towards the end of the survey.

2hr survey; start time 13:00
Weather conditions; sunny and fair with some rain, sea state 3, wind direction SW
Eleven bottlenose dolphins

11 bottlenose dolphins including a calf were seen travelling in front of the cardinal buoy. This group then split into a group of four bottlenose dolphins including the calf to travel towards the fish factory from the cardinal buoy whereas the remaining seven stayed at the cardinal buoy leaping and lunging. The 11 dolphins then re-grouped and began leaping.

2hr survey; start time 15:00
Weather conditions; raining, sea state 2, wind direction SW/W
Seven bottlenose dolphins

One bottlenose dolphin was seen travelling from the cardinal buoy heading in the offshore direction. Five male Atlantic grey seals were then seen travelling down from the fish factory towards the wall.
