03/08/15 Twenty bottlenose dolphins

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: Overcast turning sunny, sea state 1, wind direction S
6 bottlenose dolphins

Four bottlenose dolphins were seen leaping, breaching, splashing and circling quickly near the harbour wall about 45 minutes into the survey. They were soon joined by another bottlenose dolphin, and moved towards the cardinal marker where they displayed milling and energetic behaviour at the surface. One of the dolphins in this group was a juvenile. During the last half an hour, the group of dolphins split into two groups of three; the group with the juvenile stayed close to the cardinal marker and was seen foraging, while the other group was seen travelling towards the harbour wall. By the end of the survey, only one individual from the first group was still present, and was seen travelling towards the fish factory. However, the second group remained foraging in the harbour and was seen during the next land watch as well.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: Sunny turning overcast, sea state 1, wind direction SE-SW
8 bottlenose dolphins

A group of three bottlenose dolphins was seen foraging in the harbour at the start of the land survey. 15 minutes later, five more dolphins (a group of two dolphins and three individuals) were spotted in the bay. They were displaying a mixture of foraging, milling around at the surface and travelling behaviour. Later on, a group of four was seen displaying energetic behaviour around the cardinal marker, while three other dolphins were seen travelling with regular surfacing towards the fish factory. During the remainder of the survey, a group of five dolphins and an individual were seen displaying energetic and social behaviour close to the cardinal marker and the harbour wall, respectively.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: Overcast, sea state 2-3, wind direction S
5 bottlenose dolphins

A group of four bottlenose dolphins with a juvenile was seen foraging, milling around at the surface and travelling around the New Quay bay during the first hour of the watch. Later on, the group split into smaller groups which were seen foraging and travelling with leaping towards north. However, the group rejoined during the last 15 minutes, was joined by a fifth dolphin, and was seen displaying energetic behaviour with leaping and lunging out of the water.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: Sunny turning overcast, sea state 2, wind direction SW-S
6 bottlenose dolphins

At the beginning of the survey, a group of four bottlenose dolphins was seen in the New Quay bay circling around the surface very quickly and energetically. Upon a close boat encounter, dolphins began leaping and rolling. They stayed in the same area for approximately 1 hour, continuing with the energetic behaviour including splashing and jumping. At about 30 minutes into the survey, one dolphin was seen foraging close to the harbour wall, while another individual was displaying the same behaviour close to the cardinal marker. After 15 minutes of no sightings, a single bottlenose dolphin was seen leaping at the cardinal marker. During the remaining 30 minutes, a mother and a juvenile were seen foraging in the same area and a single dolphin was seen travelling towards the fish factory.
