03/07/12: Eighteen bottlenose dolphins and five Atlantic grey seals

13 bottlenose dolphins and two Atlantic grey seals

Throughout the survey a total of thirteen bottlenose dolphins and two Atlantic grey seals were observed. The first sighting was of a bottlenose dolphin foraging off the New Quay headland towards the fish factory. The second sighting was of two bottlenose dolphins, one adult and one juvenile, who were see travelling west around the area of Ynys Lochtyn. Five minutes later another sighting was recorded in the same area of two adult bottlenose dolphins that were observed to be foraging in the area. The next sighting came just off the head of Ynys Lochtyn, where three adults and two juvenile bottlenose dolphins were sighted foraging. Off the coast at Ynys Lochtyn an adult and a juvenile bottlenose dolphin were seen foraging. An adult female Atlantic grey seal was sighted on the coast line close to Ynys Lochtyn. From much further off the coast at Ynys Lochtyn another female Atlantic grey seal was seen. Due west from Cwm Tudu a female Atlantic grey seal was seen. During the last minute of the survey one bottlenose dolphin was observed just off the fish factory at New Quay.

Five bottlenose dolphins and three Atlantic grey seals

At the start of the survey, four bottlenose dolphins, one of which was a juvenile, were seen foraging between New Quay headland Bird’s Rock. As the boat made approached Ynys Lochtyn, a single dolphin was spotted milling around quite close inshore. On the return leg to New Quay, a female Atlantic grey seal was seen hauled out on the rocks south of Cwmtydu and the another two seals were spotted hauled out near Bird’s Rock.
