02/10/2013 – Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic Grey Seal

Five Bottlenose dolphins including one calf and one Atlantic Grey seal

A mother and calf were seen at the start of the survey close to the harbour wall where they appeared to be foraging. The two were later joined by three other dolphins. For the time these dolphins were observed they were generally displaying foraging behaviours, however they were also seen leaping and tail slapping. They spent much of their time foraging between the cardinal buoy and the fish factory. One male Atlantic grey seal was also spotted twice during the survey.

Eight Bottlenose dolphins including one calf and one Atlantic Grey seal

Dolphins were seen throughout the survey foraging and travelling between the cardinal buoy and the fish factory. Three dolphins including one calf were first seen by the cardinal buoy and soon after joined by four other dolphins travelling SE. A further individual later joined, making a total of eight Bottlenose dolphins thought foraging by the cardinal buoy. One Atlantic Grey seal was spotted around an hour into the survey close to the harbour wall.

Dolphins were again seen from the start and throughout the survey. Six dolphins including one calf were first seen travelling East between the fish factory and the cardinal buoy where they then appeared to begin foraging at depth as well as tail slapping and leaping. One Atlantic Grey seal was seen North of the harbour wall, and another individual seen in the bay south of the wall. After over an hour the dolphins appeared to leave the area however four dolphins reappeared in the last 15 minutes of the survey.

Three Bottlenose dolphins were seen at the beginning of the survey travelling east towards the cardinal buoy, these were later joined by several other dolphins, seven dolphins including two calves were seen travelling West towards the fish factory. All but one of the dolphins then appeared to leave the area after which two Atlantic Grey seals were seen close to the harbour wall. Three dolphins including one calf then re-entered the area for the remainder of the survey.
