02/09/2013 – 3 bottlenose dolphins, 3 Atlantic grey seals

2 hour survey, start time 12:00
Weather conditions: sea state 1-4, visibility >10km, light-moderate swell
Two bottlenose dolphins and three Atlantic grey seals including one pup

At the start of the survey, a female Atlantic grey seal was sighted in the water very close to the boat as it left New Quay harbour. The next sighting was of a bottlenose dolphin foraging near the edge of the reef marked by the cardinal buoy. The new born Atlantic grey seal pup was also sighted on the outward leg of the survey hauled out on the pebble beach between the two bird colonies. A female seal was then spotted three minutes later in the water and could possibly have been the pup’s mother. The last sighting of the survey was back at the cardinal buoy on the return journey where a bottlenose dolphin was seen foraging.
