02/09/11: bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seal

Weather conditions: overcast/dull becoming fair, sea state 1, wind S / SW

One adult bottlenose dolphin was seen to be foraging a short distance out from New Quay harbour wall. A further two were seen to be foraging just off the end of the harbour wall. Later in the survey an adult bottlenose dolphin was seen travelling south away from the cardinal buoy toward the shallower water. This was later joined by one further adult bottlenose dolphin. Also seen during the survey was one Atlantic grey seal. This was seen in the water swimming west past the foot of the harbour wall.

Weather conditions: overcast/dull becoming sunny, sea state 2-1, wind W / WSW

Two adult bottlenose dolphins were seen to be foraging around the cardinal buoy. Later a mother and calf were seen in the same area heading west away from the boat that they were seen near. These animals, the mother and calf, later returned to the cardinal buoy and were seen to be foraging around the area. One further adult was seen in the later part of the survey to be travelling west across the harbour just out from the harbour wall, this then stopped midway across the harbour and was seen to be foraging here.

Weather conditions: overcast/dull, sea state 2, wind WSW / SSW

One adult bottlenose dolphin was seen travelling south. This animal was seen offshore about a further 100m out from the cardinal buoy. Another adult was seen foraging near to the cardinal buoy, this was later joined by another adult also foraging. Later of these two adults seen foraging together near the cardinal buoy one of them was seen to travel away North West from the cardinal buoy and out of the area. Another single adult was seen near to the end of the survey foraging near to the fish factory.
