02/07/15: 17 Bottlenose Dolphins and 1 Atlantic Grey Seal

2hr survey. Start time 07:00
Weather conditions: Overcast or fair, sea state 2-3, wind direction W
One bottlenose dolphin

Only one bottlenose dolphin was seen throughout this two hour survey; around 7am a lone dolphin was spotted milling at the surface in front of the harbour wall roughly in line with the headland. It only stayed for three minutes, however.

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: fair, sea state 1, wind direction N
Five bottlenose dolphins

Nothing was seen for the first hour of this survey but around 10am, three bottlenose dolphins were spotted in front of the harbour wall and in line with the headland. They were displaying behaviours of leaping and splashing. A fourth dolphin was seen the same distance away from the harbour but much closer to the headland. This one was foraging at depth, surfacing irregularly. 15 minutes later two more dolphins were seen closer to the harbour wall, travelling east. Two of the dolphins eventually moved on, leaving three within the last 15 minutes of the survey.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: fair changing to rain, sea state 1-2, wind direction SE
Ten bottlenose dolphins.

Within the first 15 minutes of this survey there were five dolphins, three of which were the same as the previous survey. Three were seen far out, near the headland and the cardinal buoy. Behaviours included milling at the surface, foraging at depth, and leaping. A fifth came closer to the harbour wall, milling at the surface. By quarter past 11 three of the dolphins had joined the nearest dolphin, showing behaviours of leaping and foraging, leaving one lone dolphin near the headland. They didn’t stay there for long, however, as they were later seen around the cardinal buoy. At the end of the first however, two dolphins were seen fishing near the wall. within the second hour only two of the dolphins were remaining, but they were soon joined by five more, and they were all seen to be splashing around and leaping.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: rain, sea state 2, wind direction varied from NW
Six bottlenose dolphins

The same six dolphins were seen during this survey, with no new dolphins coming into the survey area. Two were seen near the headland and four were near the cardinal buoy, all displaying foraging behaviours. The two came a little closer but after 45 minutes they had left. The four remaining dolphins moved closer so they were in front of the wall, still displaying foraging behaviours. They seem to have dispersed in the second hour, with three spotted off the wall, travelling back to the cardinal buoy, and one dolphin at equidistance between the buoy and the headland. At the end of the survey they had regrouped, however.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: overcast, fair to sunny, sea state 1, wind direction NW
Four bottlenose dolphins

There were four dolphins seen from 15.30-16.00, milling at the surface around the cardinal buoy. They appeared to disperse during the second half of the survey with three and then two seen still milling at the surface but gradually moving over to the fish factory headland.

2hr survey. Start time 17:00
Weather conditions: fair to sunny, sea state 1-2, wind direction N/NE/NW
One Atlantic Grey Seal

There were no dolphin sightings in this survey, however a female grey seal was seen swimming in the water around 17.45 between the fish factory and the harbour wall.
