01/07/2016: 29 bottlenose dolphins

2hr survey. Start time 07:00
Weather conditions: sunny/fair, sea state 2, wind direction SW
Eight bottlenose dolphins

Throughout the first half of the survey period, a pair of bottlenose dolphins was observed foraging and travelling east past the harbour wall, and a lone bottlenose dolphins was seen foraging near the cardinal marker. In the second half of the survey period, five more bottlenose dolphins entered the survey area, and were observed leaping, socialising, and foraging north of the harbour wall throughout the rest of the survey period.

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: fair/overcast, sea state 2, wind direction SW
Seven bottlenose dolphins

Five of the bottlenose dolphins from the previous survey period were still observed foraging near the harbour wall and the cardinal marker. A sixth individual soon joined them, forming a group of six near the cardinal marker. The group was observed leaping and socialising for about half an hour, while another individual entered the survey area and was observed foraging near the headland. A seventh individual was also seen leaping near the headland about half way through the survey period. The seven dolphins were observed travelling around the survey area during the second half of the survey period, but by the end of the survey, only one dolphin was seen leaping offshore.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: fair/overcast, sea state 2, wind direction SW
Eleven bottlenose dolphins

From the beginning of the survey period, three bottlenose dolphins were observed foraging off the headland, before quickly moving to forage near the cardinal marker. By the middle of the survey, the dolphins had moved closer to the harbour wall and were observed throwing fish into the air. During the second half of the survey period, eleven bottlenose dolphins were observed leaping, socialising, and foraging off the headland, with some of them moving over to forage near the cardinal marker. By the end of the survey period, all the bottlenose dolphins had disappeared.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: fair/sunny, sea state 3, wind direction SW
Five bottlenose dolphins

In the second half of the survey period, five bottlenose dolphins were observed foraging and leaping in front the harbour wall, before travelling towards the headland by the end of the survey period.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 2-3, wind direction SW
Six bottlenose dolphins

From the beginning of the survey period, the five bottlenose dolphins seen during the previous survey period were still observed foraging in the bay, with a sixth dolphin having joined them and foraging nearby. The sixth dolphin moved towards the harbour wall, briefly foraging off it, before disappearing. The group of five were observed milling about, foraging, and socialising near the harbour wall throughout the rest of the survey period. By the end of the survey, three of the dolphins were seen travelling north, with the remaining two left to forage ear the harbour wall.

2hr survey. Start time 17:00
Weather conditions: fair, sea state 3, wind direction SW
Five bottlenose dolphins

Two of the bottlenose dolphins seen during the previous survey period were still observed foraging near the harbour wall throughout the first half of the survey, and joined by another three to continue foraging in the same area throughout the second half. By the end of the survey period, four dolphin were still observed foraging near the cardinal marker, with one having moved to forage near the cardinal marker.
