Wire sculptor raises funds for Welsh wildlife

Steph Smith

Sculptor, Stephanie Smith, is using her art to raise awareness and funds for Skomer Island’s seabirds.

The Lancashire based artist has recently joined us as a WILDFundraiser. Steph is passionate about birds and uses her artwork to draw attention to the plight of birds on the red list.

Each sculpture is handmade meaning no two pieces are alike. She uses a mix of materials, often recycled, as well as driftwood that she gathers from her local coastline.

She is an ambassador for Curlew Action and uses her sculptures to raise money for curlew conservation. In addition to this, Steph is creating a series of puffin sculptures to raise funds for Skomer Island’s seabirds.

Steph said, “I am delighted to work with an organisation which places conservation at its heart and has the knowledge and expertise to educate me and thereby give my work more authenticity.”

In September, she exhibited one of her puffin sculptures in The Royal Society of Marine Artists Exhibition. She was thrilled when she sold the sculpture and she generously donated £30 from the sale of this piece to support our conservation on Skomer Island. More recently, she has sold a puffin sculpture to interior designer Charlotte Findlater and has donated another £25 from this sale.

Steph is currently exhibiting in the Mick Oxley Gallery and Old Courthouse Gallery with the hope of selling another piece to raise further funds for Skomer Island.
