When it comes to men’s mental health, some of the most powerful moments don’t happen in a room they happen outdoors. There’s something about being shoulder to shoulder on a walk that makes it easier to talk, to listen, and to just be. For me, walking in nature has become an essential part of supporting wellbeing not just for myself, but for the men and families I work with through Lads and Dads CIC. We’re a community interest company based in Bridgend, focused on helping men and fathers reconnect with themselves, with their children, and with each other. Our walks, activities, and meet-ups are all about creating safe, open spaces where conversation can flow naturally, without judgement or pressure.
Walking for Wellbeing: Finding Strength in Nature at Parc Slip

One of our favourite places to do that is Parc Slip Nature Reserve in Tondu, cared for by the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales. It’s a space that instantly puts people at ease. There’s plenty of parking, a welcoming on-site café, and clearly marked walking routes that suit everyone. You can be out for an hour or lose track of time and stay much longer the mix of open paths, woodland, and wildlife makes it the perfect place to reset and reconnect.
We even use Parc Slip for our Christmas Eve and Boxing Day walks, These walks give men and families a place to come together during what can be a difficult or lonely time of year. It’s about connection not just with others, but with the season, the landscape, and a sense of belonging.
What I’ve also found helpful is using apps that identify trees, plants, and birds along the way. It brings another layer to the experience a sense of learning and curiosity that really ties into the Five Steps to Wellbeing:
- Connect: walking side by side opens space for genuine connection.
- Be active: gentle exercise boosts energy and mood.
- Take notice: spotting wildlife or seasonal changes keeps you present.
- Keep learning: discovering more about nature through an app or guide adds depth.
- Give: sharing time, stories, and support with others.

Men often find it difficult to talk about their feelings. But when we walk, the pressure fades. There’s no need to sit down and have “the talk” it just happens naturally. Some men walk and talk. Others walk and listen. And both are equally powerful. It’s about being there, in that shared space, knowing you’re not alone.
I remember one Lads and Dads walk at Parc Slip where a small group of men turned up early one morning, each carrying their own worries. By the end, something had shifted laughter returned, stories were shared, and everyone walked a little taller. That’s the quiet magic of nature: it gives people room to breathe, reflect, and reconnect.
I’d encourage every man to take that first step reach out and get involved. Lads and Dads CIC hold regular walks each week across different locations, creating spaces where men can talk, listen, and reconnect. And if you’re near Tondu, make it Parc Slip it’s one of those special places that always delivers a sense of calm and connection. Check out our website ladsanddads.org.
What you waiting for? Get your shoes on and go with a mate, take your children, or just head out on your own. You don’t need to climb a mountain to feel better. Sometimes all it takes is a steady walk, a breath of fresh air, and a reminder that you’re part of something bigger.
Because sometimes, the path to feeling better really does start with a single muddy footprint.
