Brecon's new recycling trial raises funds for wildlife!

Meet our newest #WILDFundraiser, Brecon Town Council!

We're excited to be joined by our first Town Council as Brecon Town Council trial their new recycling reward system!

All residents and visitors are invited to get involved in their  Scan|Recycle|Reward trial, which is running in Brecon until 4th October 2023. The trial will encourage people to sign up and claim a 10p cash reward by scanning uniquely coded stickers on drink containers at home by using their normal kerbside recycling collection or 'on the go', at return points located around the town.

Although completely voluntary, it is hoped that as many people as possible will join in and help improve recycling rates, whilst also benefiting from the rewards on offer. For every container scanned and recycled correctly, participants will have the choice to ‘cash in’ their rewards or to donate it to two local charities nominated by Brecon Town Council.

We are delighted that The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales is one of the charities nominated, alongside Brecon Food Bank. This means you can recycle and raise funds for wildlife without it costing you a penny!

The Mayor, Councillor Michaela Davies, said “This is a very exciting and interesting scheme for Brecon and we welcome the trial of this new technology.  I encourage everyone to get involved and contribute to the knowledge that the scheme will provide, as well as supporting The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales and Brecon Foodbank.”

This trial is being led by Digital Deposit Scheme Alliance, in partnership with Welsh Government, Powys County Council, WRAP Cymru and local retailers.

This trial will help us understand people's preferred return options for recycling these drinks containers and help us learn more about recycling behaviour. This will be the first time anywhere in the world that a whole town will use this new technology and the findings will be analysed and shared with the rest of the UK, putting Brecon at the forefront of recycling innovation.
