Mae hyn yn creu cynefinoedd amrywiol i rywogaethau eraill ffynnu, gan fod o fudd i amrywiaeth eang o anifeiliaid a phlanhigion eraill. Cyfeirir yn aml at afancod fel 'rhywogaeth allweddol' neu 'beirianwyr byd natur' oherwydd yr effaith gadarnhaol y gallant ei chael ar yr amgylchedd.
