Carmel comprises a mosaic of habitats with a distinct patchwork pattern of woodland blocks and unimproved and semi-improved hay meadows.

Coed y Bwl is an ancient Ash woodland situated on the northwest side of the Alun Valley and overlies the Carboniferous limestone. The site is a notified SSSI.

Mixed woodland and stream on slopes of Old Warren Hill Iron Age hillfort. The iron age hillfort is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

A restored opencast site consisting of grassland, woodland, wetlands, including lakes with bird hides. Green Flag Accredited Nature Reserve and Visitor Centre.
