Applications for some large infrastructure projects are decided by Welsh Ministers instead of the local planning authority. These include energy projects, roads, railways and airports, dams and reservoirs and certain waste facilities, subject to various thresholds, and are called Developments of National Significance (DNS).

With nearly 350,000 breeding pairs of Manx Shearwaters, over 43,500 Puffins, thousands of Guillemots, Razorbills and Kittiwakes and hundreds of Fulmars, Skomer is an internationally important seabird island.
It is also located less than a mile off the beautiful Pembrokeshire coast making it a great place to visit for the day or stay overnight.

Building with wildlife in mind can have big benefits for people as well – research has shown that contact with nature is good for our health and wellbeing. Green spaces can also improve air quality, lower flood risk and provide places for the local community to come together.

It's vital that today's young people have the opportunities to form life-long connections to nature and have their say in creating a wilder future. Whether that's through fun activities with the family, learning at school, joining Wildlife Watch, or being part of a youth forum, we want to bring nature into the everyday lives of young people and help them connect and be inspired to stand up for nature.

Many areas are specially protected for their wildlife value. They range from vast landscapes to single fields. Some are protected by law, and others by policy. The planning system should protect these areas and the wildlife that lives in them.
