Volunteering on Skomer

By Lyndsey Maiden on 20/09/2011

Voluntary Assistant Wardens are required on Skomer Island from 23 March to mid October.

NOTE: We are fully booked for 2013. You may go on the waiting list in case of cancellations. We will require name, contact telephone number and dates you are/are not available. Bookings for 2014 will probably open on the last Monday in September for members of the Wildlife Trust of South & West Wales only and non members will able to book about three weeks later. Exact dates will be advised by mid summer.

We take up to six Voluntary Assistant Wardens each week (Saturday to Saturday), to help with managing day visitors, assisting with overnight guests and their accommodation, conservation work including monitoring and surveys, and building maintenance.

The minimum age is 16 years. You will need to be able to walk several miles each day and to carry luggage up a steep, long, flight of steps several times a day. You need to enjoy working outside in all weather conditions including strong sunshine, heavy rain and strong winds.

You will need to be happy talking to members of the public, have a cheerful and customer friendly approach to sometimes difficult situations. When the island is closed to visitors you will be helping out on the reserve. This may include maintenance of buildings and control of vegetation.

Why do members of the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales get priority booking?
As a way of saying thank you to our members we allow them to book early. Membership costs just £2.05 per month.
