31/10/2014 – Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: sunny, sea state 3, wind E/SE
Six bottlenose dolphins

During the first hour of the survey, a mother and calf were seen foraging in front of the harbour wall joined by one individual also foraging. Two bottlenose dolphins were also seen travelling towards the fish factory. Following this, two bottlenose dolphins were seen leaping and tail slapping near the fish factory. These individuals were then seen to be foraging off near the fish factory with another two bottlenose dolphins were foraging in front of the harbour wall. In the last 15 minutes of the first hour, two bottlenose dolphins were foraging just off the fish factory. There were no sightings during the second hour of the survey.

Five bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal

During the first hour, one Atlantic grey seal was seen in the water swimming alongside the front of the harbour wall. At the start of the second hour, two bottlenose dolphins were seen foraging near the fish factory. This group was later joined by another group of three bottlenose dolphins with all five individuals then seen to be leaping and tail slapping together. There were no more sightings during the remainder of the survey.

Weather conditions: fair-overcast, sea state 2/3, wind SE/SSE
Seven bottlenose dolphins and one Atlantic grey seal.

There were no sightings during the first hour of the survey. During the second hour, seven bottlenose dolphins including two calves were seen travelling E from the end of the harbour wall. Following this, two bottlenose dolphins were seen travelling off towards the cardinal buoy while five dolphins including two calves were seen travelling away from the cardinal buoy. At the same time, one Atlantic grey seal was seen in the water just off the end of the harbour wall. During the last 15 minutes of the survey, four bottlenose dolphins, including two calves, were seen travelling towards the cardinal buoy, two individuals were also seen foraging a short distance from the fish factory.
