30/10/2017: Bottlenose dolphins and Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: Sunny, sea state 1, wind direction S

This survey began with an Atlantic grey seal that was briefly seen bottling on front of the harbour wall. A group of three bottlenose nose dolphins, including one calf, was then seen travelling whilst foraging halfway between the headland and the cardinal marker, travelling towards the marker. Nothing else was seen until the start of the second hour, when another seal was seen bottling in front of the harbour wall. After this interval, there were no more sightings.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: Sunny/Fair, sea state 1, wind direction SE

Twelve dolphins in total were seen during this survey, although they kept moving around the headland out of sight, so some of these may have been the same individuals. Nothing was seen for the first half hour of the survey, then one pair of bottlenose dolphins were seen chasing prey at the surface near New Quay headland, whilst a group of four dolphins travelled west past the headland. A mother and a calf were then seen foraging and leaping by the headland, and an individual dolphin travelled east away from the headland whilst foraging. The second hour began with three groups of dolphins spread between the headland and the cardinal marker: an individual foraged close to the headland, while a group of three (including a calf) travelled west past the headland and a mother and calf foraged halfway between the headland and the cardinal marker. The group of 2 adults and a calf then foraged near the headland. In the penultimate interval, two dolphins foraged further out beyond the end of the headland, and nothing was seen in the last interval.

2hr survey. Start time 13:00
Weather conditions: Sunny/Fair, sea state 1, wind direction S/SE

Nothing was seen in this survey until the last 15 minutes, when a group of one calf and three adult bottlenose dolphins was seen travelling rapidly west between the cardinal marker and the headland.

2hr survey. Start time 15:00
Weather conditions: Sunny/Fair, sea state 1/2, wind direction S/SW

This survey began with a group of 4 bottlenose dolphins (including one calf) rapidly travelling west towards the headland. This group then showed slow mingling behaviour at the surface near the headland. Nothing was then seen for 45 minutes, until a group of 2 adults and 2 calves were seen mingling just off the headland and a female Atlantic grey seal was seen swimming in front of the harbour wall (and remained in the area until the end of the survey). In the last half hour of the survey a group of 3 calves and 3 adult dolphins travelled east past the harbour wall towards the cardinal marker, and then split up. The survey ended with 2 calves and an adult mingling near the harbour wall, 2 adults foraging by the cardinal marker, and a mother and calf foraging just off the headland.
