30/10/2015: 32 bottlenose dolphins and seven Atlantic grey seals

2hr survey. Start time 09:00
Weather conditions: Fair, sea state 2, wind direction S
Eight bottlenose dolphins, two Atlantic grey seal

In the first fifteen minutes of the survey, three adult bottlenose dolphins were spotted foraging near to the carinal marker. These animals remained in this area for around 45 minutes, being joined by a further individual after half an hour. Towards the middle of the survey period, the group expanded to seven dolphins, including two calves. They were seen chasing prey at the surface and throwing fish, as well as leaping and tail slapping. A further individual was spotted leaping and splashing close in to the harbour wall. During the latter half of the survey period, the large group of dolphins fragmented, but continued to engage in foraging behaviour, with three individuals eventually travelling north out of the survey area.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00
Weather conditions: Sunny, sea state 2, wind direction S
Eight bottlenose dolphins

At the start of this survey, two of the adult dolphins from the previous period remained in the survey area, engaging in a variety of behaviours near to the cardinal marker, including leaping, foraging, and travelling. Halfway through the survey, a further three individuals were spotted in the vicinity of the cardinal buoy, all foraging. Two of these individuals stayed in the area for around 45 minutes. In the last fifteen minutes of the survey, a group of two dolphins and one individual were seen foraging near to the cardinal buoy.

2hr survey. Start time 13.00
Weather conditions: Overcast-sunny, sea state 1-2, wind direction S/SE
Seven bottlenose dolphins, 2 Atlantic grey seals

One adult bottlenose dolphin was seen milling at the surface near to the cardinal marker, remaining in this area for the duration of the two hour survey. Around 45 minutes into the survey, a group of five bottlenose dolphins was seen leaping and tail slapping a little way offshore from the fish factory. They remained in the area for approximately half an hour. One further individual bottlenose dolphin was seen in the vicinity of the cardinal marker during the second half of the survey, milling at the surface, and also leaping. In addition, two adult Atlantic grey seals were spotted in front of the harbour wall in the latter part of the survey.

2hr survey. Start time 15.00
Weather conditions: Overcast-fair, sea state 1-2, wind direction SW/S/SE
Eleven bottlenose dolphins, three Atlantic grey seals

At the start of the survey period, a group of three adult bottlenose dolphins was seen leaping and splashing close to the cardinal marker. A short while later a further individual was seen in this area, foraging. After around half an hour, these four dolphins travelled east out of the study area. Half way through the study period a lone bottlenose dolphin was seen foraging near to the cardinal buoy. A group of three dolphins was seen leaping and splashing a little way further offshore from the cardinal buoy, remaining for half an hour before travelling northwest and out of the study area. In the last part of the survey, a group of four bottlenose dolphins was spotted travelling rapidly west across the study area, leaping and splashing whilst on the move.
