27/07/15: Bottlenose Dolphins

2hr survey. Start time 09:00.
Weather conditions: Dull and overcast, sea state 2-3, wind direction W.
11 Bottlenose Dolphins (including 2 calves).

At the start of the survey, five dolphins were seen in four separate groups. One of these was near the harbour wall, travelling out towards the headland, while the other three groups were all around the reef, thought to be foraging. After around 15 minutes, two dolphins, including a calf, were seen moving towards the headland, on a similar heading to the dolphin that was moving around from the harbour wall. The other two dolphins remained near the cardinal buoy, milling at the surface. During the next 15 minute interval, another three dolphins were seen moving towards the cardinal buoy from the headland. The arrival of these new individuals did not seem to bother any of the dolphins already present. Around 15 minutes after the arrival of the next group of three individuals, there was a bit of movement from the dolphins, with four individuals moving around the harbour wall, but all remaining in independent groups, while a larger group five dolphins, including two calves, was seen socialising with splashing and tail slapping to the north east of the wall. This larger group then moved out to the cardinal buoy, while another five were seen moving in towards the harbour wall, and one stayed foraging off the harbour wall. At around 15 minutes past 10, eight dolphins, in two groups, were seen travelling towards the headland, with the smaller group of three travelling quickly, splashing a lot on the way. Soon after this, a group of five dolphins was seen travelling from the harbour wall towards the headland. In the last 15 minutes of the survey, two groups of two dolphins, one of which included a calf, were seen lunging and leaping in and from the water around the headland.

2hr survey. Start time 11:00.
Weather conditions: Dull and overcast, sea state 2, wind direction SW.
Six Bottlenose Dolphins.

At the beginning of this survey, a group of three dolphins, including one calf, were seen travelling from between the headland and the harbour wall towards the cardinal buoy. Soon after, there was a sighting of a group of five dolphins, including a calf, seen foraging off the end of the harbour wall. This group then moved out to sea, but continued their foraging behaviour. The larger group was then joined by another individual, though it did not integrate with the rest of the group, while the larger group started to move towards the headland, the new individual remained to forage, though it moved away from a boat that it encountered. After a brief period where the dolphins were out of sight, the group of five surfaced again near the cardinal buoy, where they remained milling at the surface for a short time. A group of four dolphins moved a little closer to the harbour wall, where they stayed at the surface. With half an hour of the survey left, a group of three dolphins were seen foraging on the far side of the cardinal buoy, and, in the last 15 minutes, this group moved closer to the harbour wall, and a group of two dolphins were seen foragin a little closer to the shore.
