26/07/12: Bottlenose dolphins

2hr survey; Start time 07:00
Weather conditions; sunny; sea state 0 -1; wind S – SW
Seven bottlenose dolphins and one calf

Two bottlenose dolphins and one calf were seen travelling north east from the fish factory, the animals were surfacing regularly and making determined progress. Two bottlenose dolphins were spotted close to the cardinal buoy milling around at the surface and another was seen foraging in this area. One bottlenose dolphin was sighted travelling west, away from the buoy, taking long dives and surfacing at irregular intervals. Five of the seven bottlenose dolphins seen throughout the watch began to leap and tail slap near to the cardinal buoy and then made their way towards the fish factory where they joined the mother and calf. The group of bottlenose dolphins continued to travel past the headland, surfacing regularly and making determined progress.

2hr survey; Start time 09:00
Weather conditions; overcast; sea state 2; wind SW
Seven bottlenose dolphins and one calf

Three bottlenose dolphins including one calf were first sighted close to the fish factory hunting and chasing prey at the surface. The group were then joined by four other bottlenose dolphins and the group were taking long dives and thought to be foraging at depth. An individual bottlenose dolphin then made its way to the cardinal buoy where it continued foraging at depth.

2hr survey; Start time 11:00
Weather conditions; overcast; sea state 1 - 2; wind N – NW
Five bottlenose dolphins

Two bottlenose dolphins were spotted near to Dolau beach, foraging and diving at depth. This later became three bottlenose dolphins and they continued to forage. The group of animals were then joined by a forth bottlenose dolphin as they moved closer towards the fish factory and began leaping and tail slapping. The group of bottlenose dolphins then became five and they began to forage and slowly travelled further north of the fish factory.

2hr survey; Start time 13:00
Weather conditions; fair – overcast; sea state 2 - 3; wind W – NW
Seven bottlenose dolphins including one calf

Two bottlenose dolphins including one calf were spotted close to the cardinal buoy taking long dives and though to be foraging. Four bottlenose dolphins were then seen close to the fish factory leaping and tail slapping. The group of four dolphins travelled east towards the cardinal buoy, surfacing regularly with all animals keeping the same. They then made their way back towards the fish factory, all animals maintaining the same behaviour. A single bottlenose dolphin was spotted close to the harbour wall diving and foraging at depth.

2hr survey; Start time 15:00
Weather conditions; overcast; sea state 1 - 2; wind NW
Nine bottlenose dolphins

One bottlenose dolphin was seen foraging at depth near the cardinal buoy. Five bottlenose dolphins were then seen leaping and tail slapping close to the fish factory and three bottlenose dolphins were sighted close to the harbour wall, thought to be foraging depth. The group of five animals made their way towards the cardinal buoy and began foraging. The nine bottlenose dolphins seen throughout the survey then dispersed and were spotted close to the fish factory or cardinal buoy, both leaping and foraging.
